Time Travel – Part 2 – Gold Rush Day

goldgpanningforgold

As part of our Australian history week we held a gold rush day. Some of our activities included fossicking for gold, baking damper and making hessian placemats.

Fossicking for Gold – What you need: – stones painted with gold paint, playground and map.

Paint some stones with gold paint. Make a map of your playground area and laminate. Ask children to hide the gold for their friends to find and draw an X to mark the spot where they have hidden it. Their friends then have to follow the map to find the gold. The children had so much fun with this activity that we scheduled extra time for them to play. Children learn many transferred skills with this activity such as map reading.

We also set up an old tent for a gold fossicker cubby house. You can set up a pretend fireplace and cook damper as well.
